In 2009, Mojang started working on Minecraft. On their website hosted on minecraft dot net they have added a server list. People could register and join one of hundreds of servers. Anyone could also easily host a server. There was a choice between server software. Besides the official one, some of people were interested in building their own server software. This custom server software was more popular than Mojang's one.
